2024 YR4 is an asteroid with a diameter of 53–67 meters, an Apollo -type object close to Earth. Between January 27 and February 20, 2025, measurements and analysis of its trajectory assessed its impact rate at 3 on the Torino scale, with the event expected to occur on December 22, 2032. The estimated probability of impact peaked at 3.1% on February 18, 2025. By February 23, however, additional observations ruled out the possibility of 2024 YR4 hitting Earth in 2032 and lowered its Torino rating to 0. In April 2025, it still has a probability of about 4% of hitting the Moon on December 22, 2032, at around 15:19 UTC*.
Throughout its history, Earth was hit by countless celestial bodies, the most well-known and publicized by the scientific community being the one that led to the extinction of dinosaurs, approximately 66 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period. The event, proposed by a scientific team led by Luis and Walter Alvarez in 1980 (known as the K-Pg Extinction), was caused by the impact with a massive asteroid (approximately 10 km in diameter). Such events can happen at any time, with a significant number of possible extinction vectors located in the Asteroid Belt (between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter). It is estimated that there are over 30,000 objects in this region.
In the event of a similar impact, the entire human civilization would be annihilated. The reset of life on Earth would be a short and inevitable process. Although these potential dangers have been closely monitored in recent years, many objects cannot be observed or their trajectories calculated.
In the socio-political debate, the danger of the disappearance of human society is identified primarily in the area of human conflicts (possible nuclear, chemical, or bacteriological attacks), while natural events, which are much more numerous and unpredictable, are rarely analyzed (research requires funding and specialized infrastructure—telescopes, radars, etc.) or, worse, completely ignored. As with the complex phenomena generated by global warming, the dangers tend to exist only as ideological projections, with scientific truth being marginalized in specialist reports.
As this is a very large-scale project, it has so far been partially exhibited in various venues: the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art (Kor) and the Transylvanian Art Center in Sf. Gheorghe (RO). The entire project is scheduled to be completed in Bucharest in 2027.
